Exercise and mental health: A neurobiological explanation
Παραθέτουμε περίληψη της ομιλίας του.
The first part of my talk will be devoted to the impact of physical activity on depression and anxiety and how this is explainable by changes in brain metabolic function. Animal models focusing on neural growth factors and changes in the human brain are used to illustrate that physical activity can be used as a preventive and rehabilitative intervention in the treatment of depressive disorders and anxiety. The second part will discuss the impact of physical education on academic achievement of students, because physical education programs in schools are required to contribute to the primary mission of schools, i.e., the promotion of academic performance. My research is devoted to understanding how individual differences in cognitive processing are related to acute and/or chronic physical activity. Ultimately, this research could lead to better understanding of the neurobiological changes due to physical activity and how these changes influence cognition. The goal of this research is to develop methods for improving the effectiveness of physical activity interventions by tailoring them to account for individual benefits in academic performance in schools. The theoretical background shows that acute physical activity enhances cognitive performance, and, at the same time, affects the release of steroid hormones. Consequently, the shift in hormone concentrations may be jointly responsible for cognitive changes.
